Goshu Ondo, originated from Shiga prefecture in Japan, is a kind of traditional dance and songs with storytelling style, which is usually sung and danced in Bon festivals in Kansai area during summer.
The song (Ondo) is basically accompanied by a taiko drum, and a shakujo, which is originally a ritual implement of Yamabushi (a kind of Buddhist monks) and developed as a musical instrument especially for Goshu Ondo and is played/shaken by the singer him/herself, and most importantly, Ohayashi, the dancers' and backing singers' chorus in a call-and-response. Nowadays at many occasions Goshu Ondo is accompanied also by electric guitars, shamisen or synthesizers etc.
We have just started learning Goshu Ondo in Tokyo (not in Kasai area where the Ondo is common) since 2017 and this project is to seek what we can do with this Ondo by re-arranging in various styles, and just to have fun. The project goes on.
